Not all trekking seasons suit all routes. This guide goes beyond general advice — showing exactly how each major route performs across all four seasons, with interactive comparisons and honest assessments.
The standard advice — "go in October" — is correct but incomplete. Nepal's eight major trekking routes each have their own microclimate, altitude range, and seasonal personality. October is the best month for EBC; but for Upper Mustang it is already late; for Poon Hill in the rhododendrons it misses the best by six months. This guide gives you the complete picture, route by route.

Ghandruk village — the Annapurna approach trail at its finest in spring
Q: My dates are fixed in July–August. What can I realistically do?
Upper Mustang is your best option by far — it is the only major route that is genuinely excellent in the monsoon. If Mustang is out of your budget, lower-altitude cultural tours around Kathmandu and Pokhara are beautiful in the green season. Trek-wise, Langtang and Poon Hill are possible but involve accepting muddy trails, leeches, and limited views.
Q: I want to see Everest specifically. When do I go?
October for the classic experience. Late September to mid-November is the full prime window. April–May is also excellent — with the added atmosphere of Everest climbing season. Avoid June–September (monsoon) and consider December–February only if you have cold-weather camping experience and flexibility for flight delays.
Q: I want rhododendrons. When and where?
Mid-March to mid-April on any Annapurna route. Poon Hill and ABC are the best rhododendron treks — the trail from Ulleri to Ghorepani passes through dense rhododendron forest at exactly the right altitude for the peak bloom. Langtang also has good rhododendron forests. EBC is above the rhododendron zone for most of the route.
Q: Is there ever a "wrong" time to go to Nepal?
Honestly, the peak monsoon (July–August) on most standard routes is genuinely difficult — heavy rain, muddy trails, leeches, no views — and we do not recommend it for most trekkers. Everything else has trade-offs, but they are manageable with the right expectations and route choice. Winter on a lower-altitude route like Poon Hill can be spectacular.
