Nepal has four distinct seasons — each with its own rewards. Whether you're here for trekking, wildlife, festivals, or simply to avoid the crowds, this guide will help you choose your perfect window.
The short answer: October–November and March–Aprilare Nepal's peak trekking seasons for good reason — clear skies, stable temperatures, and accessible trails. But every month has something to offer the curious traveller who knows where to look. The monsoon? Go to Upper Mustang, where it barely rains. Winter? Chitwan and Bardia have the best wildlife viewing of the year.

A clear autumn morning — Nepal's most sought-after trekking conditions
March – May
Rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides. Perfect temperatures for trekking. The most spectacular visual display of the year on trails like Poon Hill and the Annapurna Circuit.
★★★★★ Trekking
June – August
Heavy rains transform Nepal into a vivid green. Most treks are difficult but the rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo) stay dry. Festival season at its most vibrant.
★★☆☆☆ Trekking · ★★★★★ Festivals
September – November
The golden season. Freshly washed air, crystal-clear mountain views, and perfect trail conditions. Dashain and Tihar festivals. The most popular time — and deservedly so.
★★★★★ All-round
December – February
Cold but beautifully clear. High passes may close with snow. Lower altitude trails and Chitwan wildlife tours are outstanding. Dramatic mountain photography conditions.

Trekking during the monsoon
The Mustang and Dolpo regions sit behind the Himalayan rain shadow and receive very little rain even during the monsoon. This is the only time foreigners can visit Upper Mustang without the crowds — a truly special experience. Permits are required and we can arrange everything.
Best time to see Everest clearly
October is the winner. The skies are clearest and most stable in the weeks just after the monsoon retreats. March–April is a close second, though haze builds through the day. January–February also offers superb clarity, though cold.
Climbing expeditions at Everest Base Camp
If you want to encounter expedition teams at EBC, visit in April–May (spring season) or September–October (autumn season). EBC is always accessible on foot — it is not a restricted zone.
Visiting during Dashain
Nepal's biggest festival (usually October) is magical to witness but bring patience — domestic transport and accommodation fill up fast as millions of Nepalis return to their home villages. Book everything well in advance.
Budget travel
June–August offers the cheapest flights and hotel rates with zero crowds. If you're culturally curious (rather than trek-focused), this can be the most rewarding time — locals are going about their normal lives, not catering to tourists.
